We got ours as a gift, my wife only used a couple of times. I was trying to help clean up and put it in the dish washer, came out with black stuff all over my hands.
Horrible Beaters turn everything black

My sweet 32 year old bowl-lift mixer is still going strong, This is a 5/5. But the replacement beaters I bought because the original white powder coating was wearing off is a nightmare! I soaked them in vinegar, cleaned with baking soda, and was happy ... for about an hour. Into the dishwasher and back came the black powder. These beaters are mis-represented by calling them stainless steel. They are more like coal. So unhapy and am using my ragged initial beater because I am nervous about buying more. This sentiment is clearly mirrored by other commenters as it is a significant problem.

After going through several of the chipping/flaking coated beaters, I was frustratingly looking for something more durable. I almost didn't buy this because of the reviews, but I took a chance anyway because the claims didn't make sense. There are a lot of folks giving one star because the beater is "not dishwasher safe," however, if you look at the pictures of their "defective" product, they have the burnished beater, not the stainless steel. I have no idea why Kitchenaid ever made a non-dishwasher safe burnished beater (it now shows out of stock), but this stainless steel beater is definitely fine in the dishwasher (like anything else that is a single piece of stainless steel). It is more expensive, but definitely worth it.
Very poor material used to make this attachment.

I bought the Professional HD model stand mixer for my wife and it works great. All the attachments work good except the flat beater. We cannot use it anymore as it now releases a black powder from it. I cannot believe that with all the negative reviews that a company as large and reputable as Kitchen Aid hasn't responded and recalled these inferior tools. We may have to sell this one and go with Cuisinart.
Black residue- worried!

I as well used my flat beater once and washed it in the dishwasher which destroyed the topcoat of whatever was on there! Now there is black residue on everything! I’m worried that the topcoat was toxic and coming off in my food! And it’s not truly stainless steel! I’m very upset. I trusted kitchenaid for over two decades and I’m seeing a big upset in quality as a consumer. How was this overlooked in focus groups??? I’m worried what has gotten into my food!
